VIKSAT was set up in the year 1977 as an activity of the Nehru Foundation for Development (NFD) to take proactive steps to conserve the environment. VIKSAT has been working with communities in their local regions towards developing models of sustainable natural resource management, imparting skills related to institution building, resource generation, management and networking. VIKSAT works in key thrust areas, namely, Environment and Climate Change, Land and Water Management, WaSH, Sustainable Livelihoods, and Institution & Capacity Building.

VIKSAT’s outreach is more than 12,000 families in the domain of forestry, land development, watershed development, improved agriculture, sutainable livelihood, instittuion development and credit linkage. The oraganisation currently has direct presence in over 200 villages in five districts of North and East Gujarat which covers some of the most fragile eco regions of the country.
